the ads are impossible to escape. breaking tonight, a scandal brewing in the mega industry of fantasy football. why the integrity of those sites is being questioned. a warning tonight from police after another sexual assault in virginia. how the latest victim got away. and the good samaritan on the side of i-270. why this was no ordinary good samaritan, and why he was in the right place at the right time. >> first, breaking news out of prince george's county. someone has been murdered at a gas station in forestville. shomari stone just got to the scene where it happened. he is live with what he is learning from police. shomari? >> reporter: right now

detectives are gathering details. they are reviewing notes. let me move right out of the way. you can see them right there across the street. we are here at walters lane and chavez lane at the bp gas station in forestville. let's roll some video. this happened around 7:15 tonight. police are telling me that a man walked into the gas station and opened fire on another man. they tell me this was a targeted attack. there was a clerk inside, along with the victim who was a customer. and police are investigating to see if there were more customers inside the gas station. there is surveillance cameras, or excuse me, there are surveillance cameras here at the gas station. police will review the surveillance video. and again, they are trying to see if there are more customers inside this place. and they don't know if the man drove away or if he ran away from the scene. they're obviously trying to figure that out. and they will review the video. also, they're trying to determine a motive. now the man was transported to the hospital. that is where he died.

police are scratching their heads on this one again. they tell me that this was a argued the attack, and they urge anyone with information, if you have any, call the prince george's county police department. live in forestville, i'm shomari stone, news4. and more breaking news tonight. a scandal in the billion dollar fantasy sports industry. >> the two major fantasy betting sites are defending themselves tonight after allegations of what amounts to insider trading. the "new york times" reports tonight that last week a draft kings employee accidentally released data before the start of the third week of nfl games that same employee won $350,000 on rival site fan duel that same week. both companies have temporarily banned their employees from playing games on other sites. but it raises more questions, like should those sites be considered gambling. i take a deeper look at that debate coming up in 15 minutes. developing in arlington tonight, police are asking you

to pay attention and to walk in groups after another sex assault. this happened saturday on north scott street. a man followed a woman home around 2:30 saturday morning. he pushed the woman behind some bushes, threatened her with a knife and touched her inappropriately. the woman was able to get away and took off running. police do not believe this was related to six other recent sex assaults in arlington. >> i'm the same. those are the words of the man who opened fire at an oregon community college last week. a police source says christopher harper mercer left behind a multipage manifesto. in it he complained about not having a girlfriend and said, quote, other people think i'm crazy, but i'm not, end quote. his mother has also told investigators harper mercer was struggling with some mental health issues. we have learned tonight president obama will visit umpqua community college on friday. the school allowed faculty,

students and staff to return to collect their belongings and for counseling. classes will resume next week. here at the live desk, we're keeping an eye on south carolina where dams are failing left and right. and mandatory evacuations are under way in some neighbors. now the flooding has killed at least 11 people, and we're learning more about some of the victims who have drowned. most of them died in their cars, washed away by the floods. they range from a 24-year-old woman who a 78-year-old man. more than 500 roads and bridges are closed right now, a lot of them around the city of columbia, which got 20 inches of rain in three days. emergency officials say in that part of the state as many as nine dams have already failed. >> we don't have enough to count right now. so we've got too many dams to be able to tell you right now how many. >> the rain is moving out, but some of those rivers may not crest for a couple of weeks which means they could be dealing with flooding for quite a while. at the live desk, i'm chris lawrence.

charities and companies. even ripping off virginia's senate minority leader. the news4 i-team broke the story tonight. linda wallace is scheduled to appear in federal court next week. she also goes by the name lynn miller. prosecutors say she was minority leader dick saslaw's campaign treasurer, and wrote 73 fraudulent checks from the senator's account without his knowledge. they say she helped create shell companies and moved the money into accounts she controlled. before charges were filed, the news4 i-team caught up with military talk about the investigation. >> i'm from channel 4. >> call my lawyer. >> miller is also accused of pocketing money from an autism organization she helped create. her home in a secluded fairfax neighborhood is listed for sale there is no comment from defense lawyers or from senator saslaw. this story started with a tip to the i-team to send them a story idea. visit our nbc washington app and

click on investigation. 15 more fairfax county jurors will come in tomorrow and could wind up serving on the charles severance trial. attorneys are screening jurors to find out if they can handle a six-week trial. only half of today's 100-person pool is still remaining. it could be thursday before jury selection is complete and opening statements begin. severance is charged with killing three well-known alexandria residents over a ten-year span. amtrak is adjusting service tonight because of that derailment up in vermont. the vermonter train, which runs between d.c. and st. albans, vermont, will stop and start in springfield, massachusetts for the next couple of days. seven people are in the hospital tonight after fife cars derailed when they hit debris from a rock slide about an hour into the trip. one is in serious condition. the national transportation safety board is on scene and investigating tonight. now new at 11:00, a 9-month-old baby girl has a lot to look forward to in her life. she is alive tonight.

>> it's all thanks to a montgomery county police officer and a mysterious good samaritan who has been identified tonight as news4's darcy spencer tells us, this is no ordinary good samaritan. darcy? >> reporter: doreen, that good samaritan is actually a firefighter/emt who lives in arkansas. he was here in maryland over the weekend for the national fallen firefighters memorial service. his dad had died in the line of duty a year ago. the president attended that service. the emt was headed down here on i-270 when he saw that baby in distress. and he tells me tonight that this was all fate. this is baby kenzlee mae in her hospital gown, doing just fine. her mom and dad breathing a huge sigh of relief and thanking the police and firefighters who saved the 9-month-old baby girl's life. kenzlee was riding in the car with her grandparents on i-270 on sunday when she became

unresponsive. her granddad pulled into the median, where officer james harman had made a traffic stop. kenzlee's grandma rushed her to the officer who began cpr, reviving the little girl within minutes. >> it was amazing how fast the baby came back. the eyes came back. the baby became responsive, started tracking our fingers. >> reporter: during those chaotic moments, an emt also stopped to help. he was returning from a fallen firefighters memorial service in emmitsburg. no one knew who he was. fire officials in montgomery county used social media to track him down. brodie chanel is a firefighter/emt in little rock, arkansas. his father, a fallen firefighter who died in the line of duty last year, was being remembered at that memorial service. >> i think it was meant to be. it was the right place, right time situation where, you know, like i said, i could assist the officer in what he was doing and help save the lives. >> reporter: kenzlee's parents

breaking news tonight in the fantasy sports industry. the two largest websites draft kings and fan duel defending their integrity of their sites. according to "the new york times," a draft kings employee accused of win mortgage than 300 thousand dollars on fan duel in a move similar to insider trading. you know, people have been playing fantasy sports for years. now it's daily and weekly. as we learn more about the scandal, the debate is heating

up over whether fantasy sports is considered gambling. in most of the country, the answer is no. step up to the plate at draft kings.com. the ads seem to be everywhere. the target audience young men who know their sports or like to think they do. so much so they're willing to place a wager on stats or how an individual player performance. on your cell phone, you can play any time, any place. >> it opens up a whole another app and you can never escape it. >> reporter: the two biggest daily fantasy contests are draft kings and fan duel. >> i like it a little better than traditional baseball because it gives you a chance to reset and do something new every week. >> reporter: this sophomore plays on his cell phone. >> last year i spent more than i wanted to. so i set myself a limit of no more than $20 for the season. i usually play in the dollar leagues. >> reporter: jeron henderson wants to try. >> i'm interested in a couple million dollars or 100, 200,

300, anything to help out my pockets. >> reporter: so is it a game of skill or chance? the websites contend it's all about skill. so it shouldn't be considered gambling. but critics argue that doesn't matter. chance would make it gambling. skill means it takes talent, a deep understanding of the sport and rosters. even with an assist from those spreadsheets filled with stats. the websites argue it's like the stock market. those who participate do their homework. but some who study gambling addicts say there is potential for it to lead to an unhealthy addiction. >> and it certainly meets our clinical definition of gambling, which is wagers or risking something of value on an event whose outcome is certain. there are many forms of gambling that takes skill. people bet on golf. people have tried to define poker playing as a game of skill rather than gambling.

so even skilled games, there is an element of uncertainty. >> reporter: so far 45 states have declared the websites and their contests legal. courts and congress have yet to weigh. in we reached out to the fantasy sports trade association. they tell us there is no reason to call these websites gambling. it's unfortunate that the maryland center for excellence in problem gaming would unfairly characterize the fantasy sports industry in a manner that is not supported by the facts or the law. today's fantasy sports contest represent the natural evolution of a skill-based competition that fans have enjoyed for decades. >> i'm worried about it a little bit. but i feel like we're not putting too much out there. but you have so much more to gain. >> i guess in a way it is gambling. but i would hesitate to call it like traditional gambling or legally gambling. i think there is a lot of things online you can put your money towards, games of chance or skill, whatever you want to call it. >> you know, we talked to a lot of young men in our area for this story. but stats show women use the

sites too. about one in three users are women. you can learn a lot more about how much money people are spending in fantasy sports online and the people using these sites. it's all on nbcwashington.com. doreen? here is a story you may want the hear before you go to bed. general mills is recalling 1.8 million boxes of cheerios and honey nut cheerios cereal. some of the boxes labeled gluten-free could actually contain wheat. they say wheat flour was accidentally introduced to the system in an isolated incident. the recall affects honey nut cheerios with better if used with dates of july 12, 2016 through july 25, '16 as well as original box dates july 14 through july 17 of next year. speaking of breakfast, mcmuffin lovers, tomorrow is your day. you can have your favorite breakfast sandwich for all three

winds out of the north now at 3 miles per hour. and take a look at the temperatures. already in the 40s. 47 in warrenton. 48 right now in gaithersburg. 51 in baltimore. fort immediate right now coming in at 46 degrees. so yeah, it's chilly. it's going to be a lot cooler by early tomorrow morning. we're not going to see any rain most of this week there is only one exception to that. i'll get to that in just a second. right now satellite radar showing clear skies around our area. but notice just out of the south, the clouds moving in towards portions of the delmarva, across portions of south carolina, north carolina. look at this monster storm here. this is the storm that really helped to create all that flooding into the carolinas. it's finally moving off the coast. so it's taking the bulk of the rain just offshore now. but there is more forming in north carolina and south carolina. so they are not out of the woods just yet. this storm moving off slowly, right behind joaquin there is hurricane joaquin making its way to the north of bermuda. but they're all moving out and they'll continue to move away from the area. morning temperatures tomorrow

under mostly clear skies. 44 in gaithersburg. 42 in martinsburg. 47 in la plata. you're going to step out the front door tomorrow. make sure the kids have the jacket on. you'll probably need it too. here is the best news. with this kind of an atmosphere, we warm up quickly with sunshine. and we will see that tomorrow. 56 degrees by 8:00. 69 by noon. a great day to get lunch outdoors. 4:00, 76 degrees. looking pretty good. and then we cool quickly once again. the sun goes back down to 71 degrees. that impact forecast for tomorrow, well, weather is going to be a very low impact on your day. sunshine, chilly morning. but again, not bad at all. and that's going to be the case for the next four days in a row. 76 tomorrow. 79 on your wednesday. 75 on thursday. and look at the 80-degree day that of course is friday. why is it so warm? well, we've got a frontal boundary coming through. that cold front will sweep through late friday into saturday. saturday's high temperature only around 68 degrees. and there will be a chance for showers late friday into saturday. it's not going to rain most of

we're tied for first in division. after the first quarter. we're happy about that. >> so the redskins won the game, but another injury came along with that victory. this time it's tight end jordan reed. reed sprained his mcl and his ankle yesterday. he also suffered a concussion in the game. the former third round pick has missed 12 games the last two seasons due to injury. this would be his fourth diagnosed concussion since his college days. earlier today, some very special guests at redskins park. 31 women in the middle of their cancer treatment were pampered by some of their favorite players. this all part of the eighth annual all star survivors breast cancer celebration spearheaded by cancer survivor tanya snyder, the wife of redskins owner dan snyder. it's not just about the women getting excited here, because the players, they were pretty thrilled to be there too. >> it means a lot just to give back and these ladies are going through a lot. i can only imagine. but just to get them to take their minds for a few seconds, just to enjoy.
